A COMPREHENSIVE PHOTOGRAPHIV SURVEY OF KESWICK STATION c1970 FOLLOWS

Looking west at Keswick station c1970 after the simplification of the trackwork had left only the former down line in place and the adjacent platform 1 in use. In the foreground the very narrow extension to the original platform can be seen. In the distance the full suite of buildings and the extensive platform roofing remains in place.

Looking west from the west end of Keswick station c1970. Although the line was singled two years earlier all the station buildings remain intact at this time, but all of the signal box windows are broken; the box closed when the line was singled. The short bay road is seen on the right.

Looking east along the down platform at Keswick station c1970. A class 108 DMU is seen. They were essentially an updated version of the 79xxx series Derby Lightweights and following withdrawal of the latter were virtually, if not the only class of DMU to be seen at Keswick on normal services.

From December 1967 the Penrith to Keswick line was rationalised with track being singled west of Blencow. This view westwards along platform 1 at Keswick shows only a single track in place and buffer stops installed a short distance beyond the platform (close to the plume of smoke). The full range of buildings is in place. The photograph is undated but is c1970 by which time this station, and all others on the branch, have been relegated to the status of ‘unstaffed halts’.

Looking east towards Keswick station c1970. The line was singled and the service cut back to Keswick in December 1967. The track appears recently lifted and ballast awaits removal. The old cattle dock is seen to the right of the station. A class 108 DMU stands in the platform.

Keswick No.1 signal box at the east end of the down platform is seen c1970. The box closed on 4 December 1967 when the line was singled and all the windows are now broken.

The central part of the down platform and the station entrance thorough the closed booking office is seen from the up platform c1970. A trolley stands on the platform but by this date the station had been unstaffed for two years'.

Keswick station forecourt c1970. Little has changed from earlier pictures, the decorative metal letters above the entrance canopy still say KESWICK but LMS above it has now been removed.
