Cockermouth Station Gallery 4: 2 April 1966 - 1968

Looking east from Station Road bridge at the snow-clad Cockermouth station on 2 April 1966, a fortnight before the passenger service through the station was withdrawn. A DMU for Workington stands at the down (island) platform, adjacent to the timber shelter.  The water tank on its stone plinth is seen far right.

A wintry scene at Cockermouth on 2 April 1966 as Ivatt Class 2F 2-6-0 No.46432 stands facing ‘up’ at the down platform. This was the day on which the steam-hauled SLS/MLS ‘Lakes and Fells Rail Tour’ passed westbound through Cockermouth, but did not call.

On 2 April 1966 the SLS/MLS ‘Lakes and Fells Rail Tour’ was the final steam-hauled passenger train to traverse the entire Penrith – Workington line, and it ran a fortnight before the line closed to passengers. On this section of the tour, Ivatt Class 2F 2-6-0 No.46458 is running non-stop through Cockermouth station, having halted at Keswick from 15:43 to 16:19. Despite heavy snow at Manchester, where the tour started, it went ahead but was somewhat delayed. Earlier photos on this day show Cockermouth station swathed in snow, but it appears to have largely melted by late afternoon (16:44) when the train reached this point.

Cockermouth Station signal box is seen in May 1966; it has closed with the station on 18 April. The box stands immediately beyond the eastern ramp of the island platform. The Saxby box was opened in 1875 equipped with that company’s 40-lever frame. Over the years the structure of the box was modified. In either 1935 or 1941 an LMS 45-lever frame replaced the original one.

Cockermouth station is seen from the island platform in May 1966, the month after it closed to all traffic.  Fixtures including the gas lamps and BR totem nameplates have not been ‘recovered’; such ‘redundant assets’ (to use British Rail jargon) would soon become valuable collectors’ items. The elaborate main building on the up (right) platform is shown clearly from this angle and the unassuming timber waiting shelter on the island platform can also be seen.

Looking south-east towards Cockermouth station from Station Road bridge in 1968. two years after the last train ran between Keswick and Workington. The track is overgrown and the down platform building has been demolished. The next train running into Cockermouth would be the demolition train.
