WELSHPOOL (1st)

In the mid-1950s ex-GWR 0-6-0 Dean Goods locomotive number 2538 is seen on shunting duties at Welshpool station. The locomotive had entered service with the GWR in August 1897. It spent the period between 8 August 1953 and May 1957 when it was withdrawn at Oswestry locomotive shed.

A local service is seen departing from Welshpool bay platform number 4 in 1957.

Ex-GWR 2-6-0 Churchwood locomotive number 7309 is seen at Welshpool in 1957. The locomotive had entered service in November 1921. When the photo was taken it was allocated to Shrewsbury locomotive depot.

A rail tour to the Talyllyn Railway is seen taking on water at the Welshpool station's down platform on 28 September 1957. Smartly dressed passengers have taken the opportunity to step out of the train and observe the activity.

The up ‘Cambrian Coast Express’ is seen taking on water at Welshpool stations platform number 3 in the 1950s. The Cambrian Coast Express was introduced by the GWR in 192x. It ran between Paddington and Aberystyth. At the head of the train is ex-GWR 4-6-0 Manor Class locomotive number 7819 Hinton Manor. It was introduced to service in February 1939 and was withdrawn from Shrewsbury locomotive depot in November 1965.
