BR Deltic 55017 ‘The Durham Light Infantry’ rounds the curve at Washington South signal box with diverted train 1N12 on Sunday 18 May 1980. The loco was built in Vulcan Foundry, entered service on 9 November 1961 and was allocated to Gateshead shed (52A/GD). It was withdrawn on 31 December 1981 and scrapped in January 1983. Everything in this shot has gone:  the Deltic, the signal box and the line. (Alan Lewis laments that having a steam-heated compartment to one’s self on a Deltic-hauled train via Leamside seems like a dream now).
