On 11 August 1980, the last day of Metro trials, a two-car unit stands on the up platform of Tynemouth station, which has been extended into the area formerly occupied by four running lines. The vast size of the station dwarfs the train and is a reminder that the demolition of the buildings and shortening of the platforms was considered in early plans for the Metro; economically this might have been sensible, but aesthetics and local sentiment prevailed, as the building acquired Grade II listed status in 1978.
