Threlkeld Station Gallery 3: c1970

Looking east at Threlkeld station c1970. The bay window of the booking office (closed in 1968) projects from the northern elevation of the building. Electric lighting has been installed and, in the absence of staff to provide information, a BR ‘Corporate Identity’ sign advises passengers how to identify westbound and eastbound trains. The contrast between the rock-faced stone of which most of the building is constructed and the smooth masonry surrounding the door and window openings
will be noted
.

The passenger entrance of Threlkeld station c1970. Passengers entered from the north and were sheltered by the hipped awning which is in a state of disrepair. Assuming that the iron gate is open – which it is on this occasion – they then used the subway and stairs to reach the single island platform; the subway is shown on the next photograph. The hipped roof of the station building on the platform can be seen above the subway entrance with the signal box to its right. A ‘Paytrain Guide’ showing the timetable is displayed beneath the awning.

Looking west across Threlkeld station c1970. The down railway track that served the near side of the island platform has been dismantled, and in the distance a DMU is on the single line that leads to Keswick. The based of the yard crane is seen on the dock in the foreground.
