Looking north along platform 1 of Sunderland station in April 1988. The roofing in the foreground is recent, but that beyond was installed in the 1940s-50s. The gloom of the cutting is relieved by numerous hanging baskets. The nameboard (top left) is an attempt to show the interests of both British Rail and the Tyne & Wear Metro in the facility, the name being in T&WM’s Calvert font on a background of ‘Newcastle Cadmium Yellow’ - although it would be 14 years before Metro trains arrived in Sunderland.
