The tight Fawcett Street curve was opened in 1879 when the route from Penshaw was diverted from the Fawcett Street terminus to the new central station in Sunderland. In this view looking north-east in May 1964 No.67636, a Gresley-designed V3 2-6-2T, is on a single-wagon freight to Sunderland South Dock: note the tail lamp on the wagon. The loco was built at Doncaster works in May 1935 and entered service numbered 477 as a V1; it was rebuilt as a V3 in November 1952. Renumbered by the LNER in 1946 to 7636, it received the ‘6’ prefix at Nationalisation in 1948. It was withdrawn from 52A, Gateshead shed in November 1964 and broken up during August 1965.
