Station Name: ROWSLEY 1st SITE

[Source: Paul Wright]

This photo shows the goods shed at the first station , looking north. In later years it was sold to the Rowsley Signal Lampman, who reused the stone in a bungalow he built at Matlock. The wagon bodies in the foreground were used to store cattle cake. They were raised from the ground to prevent rats and mice from getting into the wagons and eating the contents. There were also other storage areas in the Old Yard. As a further means of keeping vermin at bay, the ‘staff ‘ included a cat, which was allowed a pint of milk each day, properly paid for through the monthly accounts.
