ROWSLEY 2nd LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT

[Source: Glynn Waite (Rowsley Association)]

A striking view of a northbound mineral train being banked by Class 2P No.40520 on 29th September 1951, with Rowsley North Junction signalbox on the right. This class of engine was not really suitable for banking duties with it big driving wheels, although this was their original reason for being transferred to Rowsley. Increased traffic during the war required more trains to be banked and surplus passenger engines were sent to Rowsley for that purpose. An internal memo had actually been issued in March 1951 advising that Class 2 passenger engines were not to be used for banking to Buxton unless there was no alternative power available, so this train was probably routed via Peak Forest. At this time No.40520 and sister engine No.40499 normally shared Rowsley’s two passenger duties with Compound No.41049
