ROWSLEY 1st LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT

Rowsley Fireman Lawrie Twigg kept a notebook in which he wrote down details of his daily workings and important events. One entry read as follows: “September 3rd 1924 – Today engine No.1069, a brand new engine, failed at Rowsley and was left”. Records show that No.1069 was new from Derby Works in September 1924, so perhaps this was its first trip. The locomotive is standing adjacent to shed just before the overbridge to the Old Yard and was almost certainly photographed on that occasion. The carefully placed staff on the engine indicates that the photographer was 'Photo Joe' Elliott.
