Station Name: RAWTENSTALL

Looking northeast at Rawtenstall station in February 1983. At this time the station's platforms were both extant in their original form. As can be seen in the picture the up platform, to the right, was longer than the down platform, to the left. The platform to the right was kept in use after passenger services ceased to run to Bacup in 1966 and Rawtenstall became a terminus. After the remaining passenger services finished in June 1972 the line was cut back to a simple headshunt which is shown in the picture. Behind the photographer was the coal depot which remained rail served until 1980.
