The south end of Penygroes station’s down (Afon Wen direction) platform in 1962. The signal box still carried a nameboard with the pre-1904 spelling ‘Pen-y-Groes’. Waiting to depart is an Afon Wen service in the charge of locomotive 42209. Number 42209 entered service on 4 December 1945 as No. 2209 after being built at Derby for the LMS. A Fairburn 2-6-4 passenger tank, this loco was withdrawn on 6 February 1965 from 6H, Bangor shed, and cut up by Motherwell Machinery and Scrap, Wishaw, in October of the same year.
