Station Name: PENSHAW (2nd site)

Looking south along the trackbed at the site of the second Penshaw station in June 2011. The entrance to the island platform was to the right of the camera. Although the railway was still officially in place and ‘mothballed’, 2½ miles of track had already been stolen early in 2003. The theft took place in broad daylight by workers wearing Jarvis jackets, recruited by KGT Enterprises which was a firm established purely for this dishonest activity. A genuine Jarvis employee observed the operation and reported what he saw. The engineer responsible for the scam, in which £250,000-worth of rails were stolen, was imprisoned for two years.
