Station Name: NEWSHAM

67261 on a push-and-pull at the up ‘main line’ platform at Newsham. The subway entrance on the down platform, where the photographer was standing, is in the right foreground, constructed of white glazed bricks to reflect as much light as possible. The ‘Sugg’ gas lamps are recent additions by BR(NE) replacing those of casement design. One on the left carries a nameplate, possible of BR(NE) origin since it was LNER practice to add them only when electric lighting was installed. The ‘Newsham change for Blyth’ is a standard LNER fixture. Beyond the signal gantry is Newsham South box, and in the background are the sidings intended for storage and handling of freight wagons, notably of coal: the life-blood of the former Blyth & Tyne.
