The new line that led to the demise of Liverpool Exchange station was the Merseyrail Link Line which opened in May 1977. The link line ran under the City Centre and linked Liverpool Central to the former LYR lines that ran into Liverpool Exchange. The new line is seen at the point where it climbs up from a tunnel to the elevated LYR route that ran from Sandhills to Liverpool Exchange. To the right can be seen the brick built viaducts that carried the line into Liverpool Exchange. As soon as the last service departed from Exchange the line was slewed at this location and connected to the new link line.
