Looking north from the south end of platform 6 in 1978. At this time the track had been removed but otherwise the station's fabric was still very much intact. The picture gives a good view of the stations overall roof which when originally built had given protection for almost the entire length of the platforms. As can be seen in this view the roof had been cut back on the western side of the station to a point where it only provided cover for half of the length of what had been platforms 1, 2, 3 and 4. The roof was cut back following extensive bomb damage in 1940 which resulted in Exchange station being out of use for several weeks.
