Station Name: LITTLE MILL

On 12 August 1969 the signal box at Stamford Crossing, one mile north of Little Mill, is seen from a northbound train. The ‘Up Independent’ line was constructed from here to Little Mill in 1920-21 to accommodate freight trains while passenger trains overtook them. This line was taken out of use in July 1967, and its severed track can be seen in the foreground. A gate box stood at the crossing from at least 1873, but the signal box seen here opened in 1920 in connection with the provision of the ‘Up and Down Independents’, and it remained in use until 16 April 1978. The box was demolished soon after closure, but the outhouse has been retained as a relay room.
