The Leeds & Liverpool Canal is seen at Foulridge – date unknown. After closure the canal warehouse was given a new lease of life as ‘Café Cargo’. The railway viaduct, beyond, was redundant from 1970 when the line closed and it would survive until 1996.

Foulridge Viaduct was redundant after the Colne Branch closed to all traffic in 1970. It is photographed here in the mid 1990s by which time it required support to prevent its collapse.

In 1996 the demolition of Foulridge Viaduct is under way. This took place one day before a Preservation Order was due to come into place.

This scene on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal has been transformed in the past 30 years with the demolition of Foulridge railway viaduct and the transformation of a derelict canal warehouse into a popular café and bistro (Café Cargo). The almost deserted canal and towpath, seen here in February 2017, is busy with barges, cyclists and ramblers in summer.

The canal required a 1,640yd tunnel, completed in 1796, to cross the low watershed between the Aire and Ribble basins. It eventually opened between the two cities in 1816. The railway which opened in 1848 and ran parallel and close to the canal managed to cross the Pennines without the need for a tunnel. The carriage of goods on the canal declined to the point of extinction in the 1950s but in that decade it began to attract leisure traffic. Foulridge Tunnel itself attracts visitors for summer weekend barge trips.
