Foulridge Station Gallery 2:
February 1970 - September 1986

Looking north-east at Foulridge station on 28 February 1970. The station closed to all traffic 11 years earlier and the line closed almost a month before the date of this photograph. Buildings survive on both platforms, although that on the up platform (left) would be demolished by the following summer. Someone has taken the trouble to daub ‘private property: keep out’ on the main building, which appears to be in good condition, though disfigured by soot – as were most buildings in the nearby towns and villages at the time. The edge stones and some of the facing stones have been removed from the central section of the down platform.

Foulridge station looking north-east circa mid 1970s. The date provided with this photograph is July 1970, but evidence of the condition of the down platform and the degree of vegetational invasion of the up platform suggests a date later than John Mann’s pictures of July 1974. The main building is intact and will be in place until 1986.

Looking south-east from the down platform of Foulridge station in July 1974. The up platform has partially collapsed, as has the central portion of the down platform, and both are disappearing under a carpet of vegetation. The station building can be seen on the down platform and the site of the station’s goods yard is beyond.

Looking east at Foulridge station in April 1983. The building stands derelict and boarded on the down platform which has largely collapsed following the removal of the facing and edge stones. Three years later this building was to be dismantled for rebuilding on the Worth Valley Railway.

The former level crossing at Slipper Hill, between Foulridge and Colne, looking north-east circa early 1980s. The crossing keeper’s cottage is derelict and boarded. The Leeds & Liverpool canal tunnel passes under the Colne Branch trackbed just behind the photographer.
