Station Name: FERRYHILL

D6821 hauls a coal train southwards on the up main line at Ferryhill on 25 February 1967. It is notable for having a ‘diesel brake tender’ to assist the braking of non-fitted freights. The station is placed to serve the lines which diverged to Spennymoor, Hartlepool and Stockton rather than the main line; trains from the south had to leave the down main line, cross the up main, then travel half-a-mile before entering the platform. On leaving the station they then needed to re-cross the up main line. This inconvenient operation was one of the justifications for closing Ferryhill station.
