Station Name: DURHAM GILESGATE

[Source: Alan Young]

Looking north-east from a footbridge over the branch line from Belmont to Durham Gilesgate in winter 1967/1968. At this point the sidings spread out towards Gilesgate station, behind the camera. The branch closed to goods traffic in November 1966 having closed to passengers over a century earlier. At the time of this photograph track-lifting has begun. A branch formerly curved away to serve Kepier Colliery: its course passed in front of the platelayers' hut, between the bushes and to the left of the three houses seen on the right. Its course can still be seen as a depression in
the back gardens of these houses.
