Looking east over Durham station on 8 September 1972. The down platform buildings, constructed in 1871-2 are on the left with a generous glazed verandah on the platform. The covered ramp this side of the building would soon be removed and modular structures erected in its place. On the up platform the glazed verandah complements its neighbour on the down platform, but it would regrettably be dismantled a few weeks after this photograph was taken. A northbound coal train is using the central track through the station.
