A Derby Lightweight 79xxx series DMU bound for Workington is seen from Station Road bridge in April 1966. Note the wooden steps on the platform alongside the guard's van. The steps were used to assist loading and unloading of parcels etc from the van. All passenger trains had a stepboard beneath each door and in those days people made little fuss about having to clamber up and down. There was another set of steps on each platform for passenger use.
