Looking north-east along Station Road towards St Saviour's Church which is seen in the distance around the time of WW1. The Mayo Memorial Fountain stands at the junction with the station approach road. The memorial fountain was erected in 1972 after Richard Southwell Bourke, sixth earl of Mayo was assassinated in 1872, whilst visiting the Andaman Islands as Viceroy and Governor-General of India. Mayo was M.P. for Cockermouth from 1857 - 1868..
