In the early 1970s the south end of the station including the station building was demolished prior to conversion of the A12 road into a dual carriageway, the land in front of the fence being required for the new road. (November 1974).

Road signs directing the public to stations often outlive the station by many years. The sign at this road junction points to Bentley station, closed 8 years earlier and to Capel station which had been closed for over 40 years.

By May 1978 only a small remnant of Capel's platform and the goods shed survived.

Looking north-east across the A12 dual carriageway in November 2018. The southbound carriageway (closest to the camera) runs through the site of Capel's station building. Beyond that was the level crossing for the old A12.
