Looking east along the down platform of Boldon Colliery station, probably in the early 1960s. The stone station building dates from 1844 and is an example of architect G T Andrews’ work which was found at other Old Main Line stations, including Shincliffe. The bay window cill is almost at platform level indicating the raising of a very low platform. A later NER-era timber shed is closer to the camera. The station is gas-lit, and a BR(NE) totem name sign is displayed on the fence. The up platform is far off, reached by the footbridge and a barrow crossing or, at the eastern end, by steps down from the road whose bridge is in the distance.  The lines curving left lead to Green Lane Junction, Tyne Dock and South Shields, carrying only goods and mineral traffic at this time.
