4468 ‘Mallard’ is seen passing Boldon Colliery signal box eastbound in 1988 on one of the 50th anniversary railtours . The loco is a Gresley-designed A4 4-6-2 Pacific built at the LNER works at Doncaster in 1938. Later that year the locomotive set a world steam speed record reaching 126mph while descending Stoke Bank south of Grantham. Originally numbered 4468, it also carried the numbers 607, 22 and finally in BR ownership, 6022 until withdrawal on 25 April 1963 from Kings Cross shed. Mallard has been preserved, now being part of the National Railway Museum collection in York.
