A grimy WD 2-8-0 heads east past Boldon Colliery station c1967, while in the background a diesel coupled to a ‘brake tender’ slopes off towards Newcastle. The photographer recalls seeing South Shields Corporation trolley buses parked over the bridge at Brockley Whins. Hearing the approach of a locomotive, he once ran to the lineside at this point and was rewarded by the sight of the beautiful ex-LNER A3 Pacific ‘Spearmint’.
