A careworn War Department (WD) 2-8-0 locomotive pulls away from Boldon Colliery station’s down platform in the direction of Newcastle. This type of loco was designed to be constructed from a minimum of exotic materials during World War II and was a simplified version of an LMS standard design. Built by the North British Loco Works in 1944, it entered service in May, a design by Riddles for the War Department, one of about 200 locos that were bought for the war effort.  Expected to last the war and then be retired, they continued to battle on until the mid to late 1960s - much to the dismay of the crews who generally detested them! With just a few months’ life left, 90321 had completed just 23 years’ service before withdrawal from Sunderland South Dock shed in July 1967. One of the locos to last until the end of steam, or near enough, it was broken up by Drapers of Hull during December 1967.
