PASSENGER TRAIN SERVICES

When public passenger services were first introduced on 13 June 1831 there were two trains on weekdays in each direction between Bolton Great Moor Street and Liverpool Crown Street. Within a few years the service had increased and through coaches were run to Manchester and Warrington.

The opening of the GJR in 1837 provided further journey opportunities and direct trains were run to and from that line.

The March 1850 timetable showed seven trains in each direction on Monday-to-Saturday as shown in the table below. There were two arrivals and two departures on Sunday.

When the direct line to Manchester was opened on 1 April 1875 a service of ten trains in each direction was operated over it on weekdays as shown in the table below. The journey between Bolton Great Moor Street and London Euston took only six hours.

There were an extra two trains each way on Saturday and there were three services each way on Sunday. Included in the timetable was a direct service between Bolton Great Moor Street and London Euston via Manchester.

By 1906 colliers’ trains had been introduced between Bolton Great Moor Street and Hulton Colliery. There was a train in each direction on Monday-to-Saturday. Departure from Bolton Great Moor Street was at 5.35am. On Monday-to-Thursday the train arrived back at 4.41pm. On Friday it returned at 4.54pm and on Saturday at 1.56pm.

The July 1922 timetable showed 31 departures on Monday-to-Friday with a couple of extra workings on Saturday. There were no trains to or from Bolton Great Moor Street on Sunday.

The LMS timetable for the summer of 1932 showed 36 departures and 34 arrivals on Monday-to-Friday with a couple of extra trains on Saturday. There were still no Sunday trains.

The summer 1947 timetable showed 16 departures and 16 arrivals on Monday-to-Friday as shown in the table below. On Saturday there were 18 departures and 19 arrivals. No trains ran on Sunday. The services were evenly balanced between the Manchester and the Kenyon Junction lines.

The 1953 BR(LMR) summer timetable showed four Manchester line departures from Bolton Great Moor Street on Monday-to-Friday and seven on Saturday. There were four arrivals from Manchester on Monday-to-Friday and six on Saturday. On the Kenyon Junction line there were seven departures on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday there were eight departures and on Saturday eleven. There were six arrivals on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday there were seven arrivals and on Saturday there were eight.

Passenger services on both the Kenyon and Manchester lines ran for the last time on Saturday 27 March 1954.

Holiday trains ran from Bolton Great Moor Street station each summer from 1954 to 1958. On Saturday 28 June 1958 there were nine holiday train departures from Bolton Great Moor Street as shown in the table below. This was the last weekend on which holiday specials ran from the station.
