Station Name: BEDLINGTON

[Source: Alan Young]

In March 1966, apart from the closed windows of the booking office, we could be looking at an open station. Although Bedlington closed in November 1964 – the penultimate month before British Railways abandoned its ‘ways’- there are some recent ‘British Rail’ posters on display: at whom were they aimed? The sturdy wooden rails both to the control access to the booking windows and allow the customers to rest their arms, are still in place, and the ‘In’ and ‘Out’ signs represent an attempt to impose some order on the crowds that the station once attracted: in 1911 over 227,000 tickets were issued. The gas lamps are also in place, and the right hand one appears to be lit.
